many, many seasons ago, long past a time any living cat or even their farthest kin can remember, there were two sisters who grew up alone in the harshness of leafbare. their mother had died shortly before their sixth moon, and the two had been left to fend for themselves when there seemed to hardly be enough prey for any cat. lonesome and fearful, the two littermates turned to the stories their mother had told them in kithood for comfort - tales of five mighty clans in a land far away, where the cats all looked out for one another and life was easy. the hope for an easy life of their own motivated the two enough that they were able to keep themselves alive, until they had seen four whole seasons come and go.
it was then that one of the sisters had an idea. if living as a group had worked so well for the clans in the stories, why could it not also work for them? she proposed that the two of them gather the surrounding rogues and loners to make a clan of their own, where cats could help hunt for each other and live happily. both sisters were quite keen on the idea, and soon went about recruiting any cats who would listen for their cause as well.
but while they did agree on the idea of a clan, that was about where the sister's agreements ended. one of the sisters, named Torik, wished for a life among the trees, hunting birds and mice and far from Twolegs. the other, Romy, longed for open skies and running alongside the river, and was less keen on the predators that lurked in the woods. she was fine with the Twolegs, she said, if it meant she could keep away the badgers. it was for this reason that the sisters created two Clans instead - Torik forming TreeClan, and Romy forming RockClan.
perhaps because of their shared heritage, the Clans have always been somewhat close. times of peace are far more prevalent than those of war - though there have, still, been times of war between the two. for a while after Romy and Torik's time, the two Clans were peaceful; then war began to drive them farther apart for many seasons, up until the somewhat recent death of the leader Brindlestar, which ushered in an era of peace that has held between the Clans since.
perhaps this peace will need to remain - for there are other worries for the Clan cats besides each other. though the kittypets that live among the Twolegplace are usually kind, more hostile city cats not under the care of Twolegs often cause trouble for RockClan, and there are whispers that the city cats have begun to form their own hierarchy, perhaps with the intent to one day wage serious war against their Clan cat neighbors. likewise, on the TreeClan border, tensions with the woodland cats are rising in spite of their usual friendliness - and while before now they had not seen much of other cats, the woodland cats are becoming more and more prevalent by the day, some of them less willing to abide by the Clan's borders than others. there are rumors that farther into the densest part of the forest, where they tend to make their home, Twolegs have begun to encroach upon the territory - perhaps driving these cats farther towards the Clans.
whatever may be happening, tensions do nothing but rise as the signs of leafbare start to approach. the Clans may have to band together to face whatever comes next.
the question is, can they do it?
