if you want to know how to name a city or woodland cat, click here!
below is a hopefully helpful guide for naming all of your Clan characters, for whenever you might get confused about the traditional naming system! i hope this helps!
PREFIXES
The prefix of a cat's name generally should reflect upon a prevalent aspect of their appearance, and can be any sort of word from nature, such as an animal, plant, or even something more abstract but also found in the natural world. (In the case of RockClan cats with kittypet roots, some exceptions to the 'natural' rule may be made.) For example, Pebble-, Evening-, Dove-, Rain-, and Smoke- would all be acceptable prefixes for a gray cat.
In the case of TreeClan, this system is fairly strict, and a parent would be somewhat less likely to 'stretch' the meanings of prefixes. In RockClan, however, it would not be uncommon to see something like a parent naming a ginger kit Gorse- (usually a prefix which would mean a more golden cat) for a yellowish, though ginger, hue, simply because they liked the sound of the name better, regardless of if it fit quite so well. Generally, however, the prefix does still have to fit well enough to at least be explainable (no black kittens named Flame-, for example.)
NOTE: Neither TreeClan nor RockClan would use the prefixes Tree-, Rock-, or Star-, seeing as they are all prefixes that they might hold as rather 'holy' so to speak. Everything else, however (including Moon- and Sun-) is fair game.
SUFFIXES
The suffix given to a cat denotes a notable skill or talent that they have - or, failing that, some significant aspect of their personality or mannerisms. Both Clans would not ever give a cat a suffix that did not make sense, did not outline something notable about the cat, or implied a negative instead of a positive aspect. In TreeClan, suffixes, while still generally falling to the base structure and common skill suffixes, can often also be linked to the way in which the apprentice proved their worth and earned their warrior name (so a swift-footed and graceful cat who earned their warrior name by jumping from a tree to catch a harrier large enough to feed a few Clanmates might be named -leap instead of -foot or -tail.)
Here are some notable examples of possible suffixes:
-fur, -pelt, -stripe, or -patch denote a cat with no particularly more notable skills or quirks beyond simply being an average, decent warrior (and for the lattermost names, having a tabby or patched pelt.) -face indicates the same, except that the cat in question is exceptionally attractive in some manner (perhaps having an especially handsome pelt, or beautiful facial markings.)
-foot denotes a cat who is swift on their paws.
-tail denotes an especially agile or graceful cat.
-claw denotes a cat with a particularly exceptional skill in combat.
-whisker denotes a cat who is especially good at hunting, and -nose denotes a cat who is also good at hunting, but more notably is even better at tracking or scenting.
-stream denotes a cat who is a good swimmer or otherwise simply confident in water or despite wet and harsh weather.
-flower denotes a cat who generally shows a more nurturing personality, and one who might be better than others at raising young.
-storm denotes a cat with a more volatile personality, whereas -cloud denotes a more patient, laid-back one.
These are just some examples - there are many more! Ailuronymy is a good resource for ideas if you get confused, though please remember that Eterna's system is semi-traditional, not traditional or quite as strict as Ailuronymy's.
NOTE: In RockClan, there is a practice where an especially commendable cat may be renamed with the suffix of -spirit, -light, -moon or -sun as a 'gift' in return for their praiseworthy actions or deeds, whatever they may be. While this practice is rather uncommon, it would still mean that -spirit, -light, -moon or -sun would never be permissible as suffixes otherwise (even in TreeClan, who would not use the renaming reward, but would honor RockClan by not using the suffixes) - and that you would have to have a very good reason to try and make a cat with said suffix (as usually it would only be a suffix given through IC event, and very rarely.)
NAME CHANGES
When a cat in either Clan is significantly injured in a way that threatens their life or forever changes it, but survives the ordeal and proves themself the stronger cat as a result, they are entitled to a name change to honor their bravery and for surviving the ordeal. This name, though always in reference to whatever injuries or differences received through the incident, serves as a symbol of courage and loyalty in the Clan and is considered a great honor. A cat who wishes not to have their name changed after an incident may also choose to forgo it - no one is forced to abide by the name change.
Examples of these names would be Crookedfoot for a cat with a broken or multiple broken limbs which do not fully heal, Clawedface for a cat suffering severe damage to their face, or Missingears for a cat whose ears were completely shredded in battle (probably to the point of lost hearing.)
NOTE: In RockClan, as mentioned above, a cat may be given the suffix -sun or -spirit in a special ceremony to commend them being /especially/ praiseworthy for some reason, though the practice is very, very rare. This not the same as a name change, and would be referred to as a "rename" instead.
NOTE2: In both Clans, it is common, in the case of exile and when a cat has proven to be truly despicable, for a rename (particularly, a change in suffix) to occur immediately prior to banishment. This is meant to shame the cat in question and the suffix given in this event will always be something negative. This practice is much more common in TreeClan than in RockClan and is in fact from where the practice comes, but would still occur in either at times (usually when the cat's crime was /particularly/ severe in RockClan, or almost always in the case of exile in TreeClan.)
