if you want to know how to name a Clan cat, click here!
below is a hopefully helpful guide for naming all of your non-Clan characters!
WOODLAND CATS
Woodland cats, be they rogues, loners, or otherwise, all generally have a similar naming system, even though they have a much less close-knit group system than their Clan neighbors. Woodland cat names are always between 1 and 3 words, and, provided they aren't a former city cat or Clan cat, almost always something to do with nature (never any Twoleg words.)
Woodland cats generally believe that when a kitbearing parent names their kits, the name will directly affect the kit's destiny. For this reason, many woodland names are much more metaphorical than the names of Clan cats, and they don't always have to correlate to a cat's appearance, though they often still do. For example, a parent might name their tiny, runt kitten Eagle's Flight, in the hopes that he may one day "spread his wings" and grow, metaphorically. A parent worried about the stability of their situation might name a kit Pine, in the hopes that she may have "firm roots" in the future.
Whatever a woodland cat's name is, if it is 2 or 3 words in length, they will usually go by a nickname (Eagle's Flight, for example might go simple by Eagle, or perhaps Flight) unless in formal situations.
Woodland cats call the seasons by the same words the city cats do - summer, winter, fall and spring instead of greenleaf, leafbare, etc. Sometimes the seasons might show up in their names.
Though the woodland group isn't quite as closeknit as a Clan's, word still travels and no two living cats may share the same name. It's common practice, though, to name a kitten after a now-dead loved one, whether just in part (Eagle Talons named after Eagle's Flight) or by lifting the entire name. Living woodland cats may share parts of their name (Summer's End and Summer Rainstorm, maybe) but they will almost always go by a different nickname in this case. (Summer and Rain, for example.) A nickname already in use is unlikely to be used for another cat; if there is no suitable one-word nickname, the nickname may be lengthened or not used at all.
CITY CATS
City cat names are nearly always one word, be it a name of an animal, a Twoleg word, something from nature, a proper name once given by a Twoleg, etc. There is not much rule wise for these - simply that they are almost always one word. As many city cats might pick up their names from Twolegs or the world around them, there is no real reason why they cannot use Twoleg words or names.
